Pro Tennis Circuit comes to Ipswich

22-06-2009

Belgravia Leisure managed George Alder Tennis Centre played host to the Ipswich International Pro Circuit tournament during May. Players from all over the world competed for rankings points on the world class clay courts that were recently reopened after a major refurbishment by Ipswich City Council.

Melbourne’s Anastasia Rodionova had the perfect preparation for a tilt at the French Open by taking out the women’s final defeating Swiss Fed Cup player Nicole Riner 6-4, 7-5. The victory earned Rodionova a wild card entry into the French Open (at which she made it through to the third round).

In the men’s event Sydneysider and former Junior French Open finalist Greg Jones won a tight final from New Zealand Davis cup player Jose Statham.

Centre manager Andy Leonti said that the week long event was well supported by the local community and an influx of international spectators totalling over 1000 for the tournament. The high quality of the centre and the courts was also praised by many of the competing players.

It is anticipated that the Ipswich International will become an annual feature on the Pro Circuit and will be an important lead-up for those heading off to the European clay court season.
