Yarra Centre - Community Program Awarded
The FitKids program run at the Yarra Centre in Victoria’s Yarra Valley has been awarded the Robyn Murray Award by the Community Houses Association of the Outer Eastern Suburbs (CHAOS) recognising the program’s community focused outcomes.
FitKids, an inclusive program which provides opportunities for children with disabilities was originally initiated by a local parent looking for a challenging, non competitive physical environment for her son. FitKids is a fun, fitness based activity program for 7-12 year olds that has been developed to ensure the inclusion of all providing the ideal environment for children with disabilities.
The program so far has attracted children with a wide variety of skills and fitness educator Cathie Sheehan provides an excellent program that is flexible and responsive to all participants. One parent commented that ‘Cathie is endlessly patient with each child. This permeates through the group so that there is total acceptance by each and every child, regardless of ability’.
The FitKids program supports the Yarra City Council’s Plan by providing a service that meets the needs of a wide range of residents, maintaining the community’s health whilst “supporting a diverse and dynamic Yarra”.
